Last night during a JV football game I experienced the second student athlete who had significant memory disruption as a result of a hit. My question is, how common is this and is the occurrence on the rise? As I mentioned, this is the second this season and the third I've experienced overall. The athlete last night had no other typical concussion symptoms, only memory loss. He didn't know what happened, didn't remember the play.

    Love to hear your experiences.

    Dear Angela,

I had something similar this year when one of my football players sustained a concussion on Fri. night game where his chief complaint was retrograde amnesia.  He had other initial symptoms as well so obviously he was removed from play, did not return that game and was re-evaluated following Mon. Afternoon.  On follow up evaluation he states he was now asymptomatic except that he still couldn't remember the play where he sustained the concussion.  He even saw the hit on tape but still had no recollection.  I haven't seen this type of case very often...maybe 3-4 times in my career but I'd say it does happen, but I haven't seen this becoming more common or a trend like you are seeing.

    Take care,  Paul
